Make Money Not Drama

Gigs & odd jobs · debunked

Paid survey and micro-task sites as an income

They do pay. Just less than any minimum wage on earth, and the tasks worth doing are gone within seconds of appearing.

Who pays you
Survey panels and micro-task platforms pay you cents per task or points redeemable for gift cards, once you cross a payout threshold. Most of the time spent is on screening questions that pay nothing.
Outcomes
0 receipts. Nobody's reported back on this one yet. Receipts open when accounts launch.

The pitch

Fill in surveys, label images, transcribe snippets, from your phone, in your spare time, and get paid. Listed at the top of every "side hustles" article ever written.

Where the money actually goes

  • The hourly rate. Studies of micro-task platforms repeatedly find median earnings a small fraction of minimum wage once you count the unpaid screening, searching and waiting. Survey panels are worse.
  • Screened out. Most surveys disqualify you after five minutes of questions that pay nothing. You were the data.
  • Thresholds and expiry. Points expire, payout minimums are set high, accounts get closed for "quality" reasons just before payout.
  • The good tasks. Well-paid batches exist and are taken within seconds by people running scripts.

It's not a scam in the sense of stealing your money. It's a scam in the sense of stealing your evenings.

Money flow test: who pays you? Research firms and machine-learning pipelines, at a rate they set knowing that people will accept it because it's on their phone.

What to do instead

Paid focus groups and user research pay per hour what survey sites pay per month. Any shift through a staffing app pays a real wage.
