Sell spreadsheet templates for one specific profession
A landscaper doesn't want a "budget template". They want a quote calculator that knows what mulch costs. Build the one that knows, and sell it forever.

How it works
Every trade and profession has calculations it does badly in a generic spreadsheet: a job quote for a painter, a rental-property cash flow, a food-cost sheet for a café, a shift roster for a small clinic. Someone who knows the profession and can build a robust spreadsheet can make the one tool that fits, protect the formulas, write a page explaining it in the profession's own words, and sell it at a price that's trivial to a business. The first sales come from the profession's forums; search brings the rest, slowly.
What it actually takes
- Expert-level spreadsheet skills: data validation, structured references, protection, clear layout, no fragile formulas.
- Insider knowledge of the profession, or an insider who'll test it with you.
- A product page with screenshots and a short demo video.
- Patience. Search traffic to a niche product takes months to build.
Where it goes wrong
- Making a generic template. "Budget planner" competes with ten thousand free ones. "Quoting sheet for pressure-washing businesses" competes with none.
- No support. Buyers will have questions; answer them and fold the answers into version two.
- Etsy-only. Marketplaces bring traffic and take control; have your own page too.
- Expecting passive to mean instant. Months of nothing, then a trickle, then a modest stream.
