Build a one-topic reference site that answers a boring question well

How long does cooked rice keep. What size bolt fits a specific mower. Sites that answer one class of dull question thoroughly earn from ads for years.

Who pays you
Advertising networks pay you a share of what advertisers pay to appear on your pages, monthly, based on traffic. Affiliate links to relevant products can add a commission per sale.

How it works

Search engines send traffic to pages that answer a specific question better than anything else. A site that covers one class of question exhaustively (storage times for every food, torque specs for every common fastener, care instructions for every houseplant, dimensions of every standard shipping container) earns ad revenue from that traffic. It takes a year to matter. It costs almost nothing to run. It works because you did the tedious research once, properly, with sources.

What it actually takes

  • A topic where the questions are specific, factual, searched for, and badly answered by what's already there.
  • Research discipline: sources, verification, updates.
  • A simple static site or a basic content management setup, a domain, cheap hosting.
  • A year of writing pages before applying to a good ad network, which has traffic minimums.

Where it goes wrong

  • AI summaries in search results are taking the click from simple factual queries. The pages that hold are the ones with tables, tools, and depth a summary can't replace.
  • Thin pages written to a keyword. Search engines penalise it and readers leave.
  • Choosing a topic you'll be bored of in a month.
  • Expecting a business. A good one-topic site is a modest, slow annuity, and most never get there.
