Resell clearance-aisle products online
Big retailers mark down stock to clear shelf space, not because demand died. Buy the markdown, sell it at the price the internet still pays.
- Who pays you
- Online shoppers pay you through Amazon's marketplace or eBay for products you bought at a discount from physical stores. The platform takes fees and, on Amazon, storage and fulfilment charges; you keep what's left over your purchase price.
- Outcomes
- 0 receipts. Nobody's reported back on this one yet. Receipts open when accounts launch.
How it works
Retail chains clear stock by season and by planogram change, marking down goods that still sell at full price online. Board games, small kitchen appliances, branded toys, and discontinued cosmetics are typical. You walk the clearance aisles with a scanning app that shows the current online price, the fees and the sales rank, and you buy only what shows a clear margin after all costs and a fast sales velocity.
Most people start on eBay, where fees are simpler and you ship each item yourself, then move to Amazon's fulfilment program once volume justifies the paperwork.
What it actually takes
- A few hundred to start. You need to buy stock before it sells, and to buy enough that a good find isn't one unit.
- The scanning app, a phone, a car, and evenings walking stores that other resellers aren't covering.
- Space and supplies for packing. Boxes, tape, a label printer once you're past a few sales a day.
- Keeping records from the first receipt. This is a retail business for tax purposes wherever you live.
Where it goes wrong
- Brand restrictions. Amazon gates many brands and categories; you can buy fifty units and find you can't list them. Check before buying, every time.
- Returns and counterfeits complaints on Amazon land on you, not the store you bought from. Keep receipts.
- The obvious markdowns get scanned by five other people. The margin is in stores and categories with less competition, which means driving further and buying odder things.
- Cash tied up in slow stock. If it hasn't sold in 60 days, cut the price and get the money back out.
