Assemble flat-pack furniture through a task platform

How it works
Task platforms (TaskRabbit and regional equivalents) connect people who bought a bookcase with people who will build it. Furniture assembly is the biggest category, partly because big furniture retailers route their own customers to the platform. You set an hourly rate, get booked, turn up with a drill and a bag of tools, and build the thing. Ratings are everything: a few five-star jobs and the bookings become steady.
What it actually takes
- A cordless drill, a good set of bits and screwdrivers, a rubber mallet, a level. Under a hundred.
- The ability to assemble anything from a diagram, fast and square.
- Reliability. Being on time is most of the rating.
- Registration on the platform, which includes a background check.
Where it goes wrong
- Damaged pieces. Photograph the parts before you start; the platform's process protects you if you did.
- Underpricing early to get ratings and never raising the rate.
- Travel time between jobs across a city is unpaid. Cluster bookings.
- It's a job without a boss, not a business. The ceiling is your hours and the platform's cut.
