Who pays you

A city recreation department, a sports club or a school pays you per session or per season, on payroll or by invoice, to coach a team or run a class. Private coaching for individual players can be added at a higher rate.

How it works

Recreation departments and youth clubs run more teams than they have coaches for, and many pay. It's not a lot per hour, but the hours are fixed, the players are assigned, and the whole thing runs by the season. You register, get the required certification (usually a short course plus a safeguarding check), and take a team. Parents of the better players then ask about private sessions, which pay several times the club rate.

What it actually takes

Real playing knowledge of the sport and some idea of how to run a practice.
Whatever coaching certification and child-safety check the programme requires. Usually a few evenings and a small fee, often reimbursed.
Reliable availability for the season's schedule.
A temperament for eight-year-olds and, harder, their parents.

Where it goes wrong

Expecting it to pay like a job. It pays like a hobby with a stipend, until you add private coaching.
Parents. Set expectations at the first practice about playing time and communication.
Skipping the safeguarding side. It's mandatory and it matters.
Burnout. One team, one season, then decide.
